Odisha is in the grip of an intense cold wave as December progresses, with night temperatures dropping sharply across the State. The cold conditions have spread from north to south and east to west, bringing widespread winter chill. The State is likely to remain under an intense cold spell over the coming week, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Friday.

On Thursday, seven locations recorded minimum temperatures below 10 degrees Celsius. Koraput recorded the lowest temperature at 6.8 degrees Celsius, followed by Phulbani and Daringbadi at 7 degrees, Rourkela at 8.5 degrees, Jharsuguda and Nabarangpur at 8.6 degrees, and Bhawanipatna at 9.2 degrees Celsius.

Coastal areas reported comparatively higher night temperatures, with Cuttack recording 13.6 degrees Celsius and Bhubaneswar 15 degrees Celsius.

In view of dense fog and prevailing cold conditions, the IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for Sundargarh, Kandhamal, Khordha, Dhenkanal and Koraput districts.

In its morning bulletin, the IMD Regional Centre in Bhubaneswar stated, “Dense to very dense fog has occurred at one or two places over the districts of Nayagarh, Khordha, Dhenkanal, Jagatsinghpur and Kandhamal. Shallow to moderate fog has occurred at one or two places over Kalahandi, Koraput, Keonjhar, Sundargarh, Bhadrak and Mayurbhanj districts of Odisha.”

Residents have been advised to take necessary precautions and stay warm as the cold conditions persist.

Dry weather is very likely to prevail over the districts of Odisha.

Shallow to moderate fog is very likely to occur during the early morning hours at isolated places over the districts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Nayagarh, Jagatsinghpur, Khordha, Cuttack, Angul, Dhenkanal, Boudh, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Koraput, Sundargarh, Subarnapur, Sambalpur, Bolangir and Ganjam.

Dense fog is very likely to occur during the early morning hours at isolated places over the districts of Sundargarh, Kandhamal, Khordha, Dhenkanal and Koraput.
