Bolangir: Farmer suicide case once again reared its ugly head in Odisha as another ‘debt-ridden’ farmer allegedly took the extreme step at Dorlo village in Titlagarharea of Bolangir district today. The deceased farmer has been identified as Ghasiram Majhi.

According to sources, Majhi had taken a loan of Rs 5 lakh from five self-help groups (SHG) to buy agricultural land. Despite repaying the instalments, the concerned SHGs were reportedly pressurising Majhi to return the entire loan amount.

Majhi’s wife, Kaikayi alleged that the SHGs were threatening him to seize his land and house, if he (Majhi) fails to repay the loan amount.

Due to this Majhi was in immense mental stress and unable to take the pressure, he committed suicide by hanging himself from a tree near his house, alleged Kaikayi.

Police rushed to the spot after getting information and sent Majhi’s body for post-mortem. An unnatural death case has also been registered in connection with the incident and further investigation is on, informed sources.
