Mayurbhanj: Tension prevailed in front of the District Collectorate in Baripada on Friday after a pregnant woman carrying stillborn twins died due to alleged medical negligence. As per reports, relatives of the deceased woman staged a demonstration at the spot seeking justice.

"The authorities at the hospital demanded money from us when we brought my wife for treatment. But when we said that we are poor people and can't pay the amount they abused us and asked to us to leave," said husband of the woman, Dasarathi Murmu.

Sources said Dasarathi had rushed his wife Bangi Murmu to Pandit Raghunath Murmu Medical College and Hospital after she developed labour pain on June 11. The couple hails from Ghatashila village under Khunta Police limits in the district.

Only after conducting an ultrasound the next day that the family members came to know that Dasarathi's wife was carrying stillborn twins in her womb.

Later, a doctor at the hospital gave some medicine to Bangi assuring that there is no threat to her life. Soon after the woman's death, the family members carried her body on shoulders and staged a protest in front of the Collectoarate demanding compensation.

On the other hand, Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Pradipta Kumar Mohapatra said, "As per the information that I have received, the woman died after falling on the floor yesterday. The allegations that she was not attended to are completely false."

As per latest reports, the protest was called off after the local MLA reached the spot and assured compensation for next of kin of the deceased.
