Cyclonic circulation over southeast BoB likely to intensify into Depression by October 23

A cyclonic circulation remains active over the south Andaman Sea and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal (BoB), meteorologists said on Sunday. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is expected to form in the same region over the next 24 hours.

The low-pressure system is likely to move in a west-northwestward direction and intensify further, potentially developing into a Depression by October 23. However, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the system is unlikely to have a direct impact on Odisha.

Still, light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorm and lightning may occur in some parts of the State, especially during the next 24 hours.

Authorities have urged fishermen and coastal residents to stay updated with weather bulletins as the system continues to evolve over the Bay of Bengal.

In its evening bulletin, the IMD mentioned, “The upper air cyclonic circulation over south Andaman Sea and adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal extending up to 1.5 km above mean sea level persists. Under its influence, a low-pressure area is likely to form over southeast Bay of Bengal around 21st October. It is likely to move west-northwestwards and intensify further into Depression over central parts of south Bay of Bengal and adjoining westcentral Bay of Bengal during the subsequent 48 hours.”

“Light to moderate rainfall has occurred at one or two places over the districts of Odisha, during the last 24 hours. The chief amount of rainfall was recorded in Ganjam district (61.28 millimetres). A cyclonic circulation is prevalent over south Andaman Sea and the adjoining southeast Bay of Bengal,” Director of IMD regional centre, Manorama Mohanty, said.

Notably, thunderstorm with lightning accompanied by gusty surface wind speed reaching 30-40 kmph are likely to occur at one or two places over the districts of Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khurda, Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Malkangiri, Rayagada, and Koraput on October 20, Monday.
