Cyclone Phethai: Flooding inside Keonjhar district hospital leaves patients in distress

Keonjhar: Patients and their relatives at the gynaecology ward of the district headquarters hospital in Keonjhar are a distress lot after rainfall triggered by cyclone Phethai flooded the ward.

According to sources, lack of drainage made the situation worse with water accumulating inside the ward. The patients’ relatives had to stay awake all night trying to stop the flooding and the cleaning staff also had a tough time in draining the water out today, informed sources.

“The patients had to wake up when water flowed into the ward. We had to use our clothes to soak up the water,” said a patient, Kabita Nath.

Lalit Kumar, a patient’s relative said “No one could use the toilet as it was completely choked. The attendants said that they can do nothing about it. We tried to contact the authorities, but no one was available.”

Jagannath Pahi, Additional District Medical Officer (ADMO) said “There is ongoing construction work in the new building. There are two joints which had been recently opened for work. The rainwater flowed through the joints and entered the ward. We will resolve the problem soon.”
