Bhubaneswar: The extremely severe cyclonic storm 'Fani' which wreaked havoc in the coastal belts of Odisha including capital city Bhubaneswar, has adversely affected weddings scheduled to be held this season.

While many marriage functions were postponed, some were called off owing to the infrastructural damages caused by cyclone Fani at the venues.

Suryakanta Sahoo, a resident of Balianta area on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar had booked a Kalyan Madap for his daughter’s wedding on May 12. He had almost completed all the preparations and distributed wedding cards among the guests. But it seems destiny had a different plan as the marriage had to be called off due to the devastated condition of the wedding venue post cyclone Fani.

With no power and water supply in the city, Sahoo was forced to send his family to his relative's place outside the State.

“I had completed the distribution of wedding cards and made all the arrangements but the cyclone spoiled everything leaving us heartbroken. I am sending my family outside station as it is difficult to bear the scorching heat,” said Sahoo, who had come to see off his family at the airport in Bhubaneswar.

Post Fani, the situation worsened so much that some wedding rituals were conducted at ravaged venues, claim wedding organisers.

“All the marriages which were to be conducted in the first week of May have been rescheduled. We are not getting labourers to work as their houses have been damaged in the cyclone. We are going through a difficult phase,” owner of Crystal Heritage wedding resort, Partha Mishra said.
