Cyclone Fani Aftermath: Villagers of Brahmagiri block struggle to get basic amenities
Brahmagiri: The devastating cyclone Fani has left behind horrific trail of destruction in Odisha. Puri’s Brahmagiri block being the worst hit is now trying to rebuild itself from the ruins.
Damaged houses, scattered debris and roofs, water soaked ration is all that is left with the residents of Rebananuagan, Talamala and Aliaput villages under Brahmagiri block. The extremely severe cyclone has not even spared the school which is the only source of education for the kids of these villages.
About 90% of the houses in the affected villages have been demolished under the impact of the cyclone. While farmers are trying to save the water soaked paddy, others are saving the little ration and goods left with them.
“We couldn’t come to the village until 4 PM on the day of cyclone. When we returned, we found our houses destroyed. Now we have nothing to eat. There is no sign of supply of relief material from the government,” said, an Aliaput villager Bhagirathi Pradhan.
Another resident, Shailabala Jena, said, “We are not receiving any cash assistance. We didn’t even get a house under Indira Awas Yojana. It has become difficult to survive.”
The death toll in cyclone Fani that unleashed devastation in several districts of Odisha on May 3 rose to 35 as per reports of the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). Highest death toll of 21 has been recorded in Puri, where the extremely severe cyclone Fani had made landfall.
