Cyber fraudsters loot over Rs 222 Crore in 16 months in Odisha: CM in Assembly

Odisha’s CM revealed that cyber fraudsters looted over Rs 222 crore in 16 months, with thousands of cases, hundreds of arrests, and frozen accounts highlighting the scale of rising digital crime in the state.

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, in his written reply to a query in the Legislative Assembly, revealed on Monday that cyber criminals have looted more than a staggering Rs 222 crore over the last 16 months.

According to the official data, the State has registered 3,486 cybercrime cases during this period.

The reply further stated that 727 accused have been arrested, while charge sheets have been filed against 104 individuals involved in various cyber-fraud activities.

The total amount siphoned off through cybercrimes stands at Rs 222,09,78,647.

Authorities have managed to refund around Rs 61.36 lakh to victims who lost money to cyber scams.

Additionally, bank accounts containing Rs 6,74,09,434 have been frozen as part of ongoing investigations to curb cyber-fraud operations.

In a non-starred question, Pattangi Congress MLA Rama Chandra Kadam asked to know how many digital arrests were made by cyber fraudsters in the past 16 months.

“In how many such cases have the tricksters been arrested during this period, and how much money has been refunded to the fraud victims?” the Congress MLA questioned.

“As many as 69 digital arrests occurred in the past 16 months,” the CM replied.

Worth mentioning, in the last three years before May 2025, cyber fraudsters had drained approximately Rs 125 crore from victims. Authorities had registered over 6,000 cases and had arrested 1,388 persons in connection with these cybercrimes.

“Different teams of the Crime Branch have been investigating various cybercrime cases. We are also creating awareness about cybercrime among people,” Crime Branch DG Vinaytosh Mishra had previously said.
