Unable to bear loan burden and crop loss due to untimely rains,  a farmer has allegedly committed suicide here on Saturday evening.

The deceased identified as Bikal Garia of Haladipada village here ended his life as he suffered crop loss due to untimely rains in the state. Besides, the growing pressure to repay laon taken fromm a microfinance company forced Garia to resort to such extreme step.

According to reports, Garia became unconscious after consuming pesticide on Saturday evening. He was rushed to Baragarh Sub-divisional hospital where he breathed his last.

As per Garia’s family members, Garia had cultivated paddy in his half acre of land and did tenant farming in seven acres of land. Garia had also taken a loan of Rs 46,000 from a microfinance company and a self help group. He had also his elder daughter to get married.

But the crop loss caused due to untimely rain left Garia depressed and disheartened resulting in his suicide.

On the other hand, district administration has initiated a probe into the death of the farmer and primary investigations have revealed that the deceased farmer did not possess any agricultural land, the tehsildar informed.
