100 Murders Every 30 Days! Crime Graph Soars In Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Shocking but true, heinous crimes like murders are on a rise in Odisha. As per State Crime Records Bureau (SCRB), 337 murder cases were registered between January and March 2019 which clearly indicates that at least 100 people are being killed every month in the State.

What is more disturbing is the fact that there has been a steep rise in the murders over family feuds, land disputes and for dowry. The murder increased by 7 percent in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack. As per official sources, 43 murder cases were registered in Bhubaneswar and 29 cases in Cuttack in 2018.

“A person kills another person without having any second thought as he/she hates the other person the most. Everyone should learn to respect the other person,” said Psychologist Pratap Rath.

On June 11, a youth was murdered in broad daylight by miscreants at Pallahara in Angul district. Similarly, a man beheaded his younger brother in sleep in Ainthapali area of Sambalpur district while a newly-wed woman was allegedly killed by her in-laws at Govindpur village in Ganjam district on June 8.

On June 7, miscreants killed a truck owner identified as Niranjan Sahu at Janindapal in Jajpur district. On the same day, a man hacked his younger brother to death at Balianta on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar.

The rise in the crime graph has certainly emerged as a major concern and a challenge for Odisha Police.

“There are several reasons for murders like family dispute, revenge and superstition which cannot be stopped. However, cops should be more vigilant and take action against the accused,” said former DGP Bipin Bihari Mishra.
