Bhubaneswar: At a time the entire world was celebrating the Elder Abuse Awareness Day on Friday, three elderly persons were brutally murdered at different places on a single day which not only shocked the people across Odisha but forced everyone to introspect over degrading social values.

Tension ran high in Angul after an elderly couple was beaten to death by his son Dukhishyam Baghar in Barapadar village under Kishorenagar police limits in the district today.

The incident occurred when Dukhishyam attacked his parents with a hammer after they tried to stop him from attacking wife.

In another incident, a man was allegedly shot dead by his inebriated son at Shrungipala village under Kundheigola police limits in Deogarh district.

A report by Help Age India, a leading Non Profit Organization caring for disadvantaged elderly also suggest that a rise in crimes and atrocities against senior citizens.

As per the nation-wide data collected through surveys in several prominent cities including Bhubaneswar about 23 percent of senior citizens are subjected to torture either by their own children and other family members.

This is not for the first time that senior citizens have been attacked or killed in Odisha. Earlier, several incidents of violence grabbed headlines after videos of such incidents went viral in social media.

A man was seen kicking and hammering his old mother with a wooden stick while a woman was caught thrashing and dragging her mother-in-law on road in two different viral videos from Balasore and Bhadrak districts respectively.

In another development, a man killed his wife over some family dispute at Bankual in Saheed Nagar area in Bhubaneswar today while a youth hacked his cousin brother to death after a scuffle over land at Nayakguda in Malkangiri today

Similarly, a woman had to lose her life while her husband suffered critical injuries after they were attacked by a neighbour. The incident was reported from Goudapalli village under Jamankira police limits in Sambalpur.

Accused involved in all the three separate cases have been nabbed by the police.
