In a major crackdown on illegal sand mining, police and the Mining Department jointly conducted a raid at the Tempo Ghat area under Keonjhar's Anandpur subdivision on Wednesday. During the operation, authorities seized more than 35 tipper trucks (Hyvas) and a Proclean machine allegedly used for sand lifting and transportation.
According to sources, the sand mafia had been operating at the ghat for a long time, continuing their activities despite repeated complaints from locals. Acting on credible information, a joint enforcement team carried out the raid in the early hours. Sensing police presence, several truck drivers hastily unloaded the sand and fled the spot. The remaining loaded vehicles were seized and taken to the Sainkul police outpost.

In another simultaneous action, police and mining officials under the Nandipada police station seized 21 Hyvas loaded with sand near Rana Chhak. Officials said strict action will be taken against all those involved in the illegal transportation of sand.
Authorities have vowed to continue such drives across Keonjhar district to curb rampant illegal sand mining and protect natural resources.
“Children go to school in the morning. The speeding trucks pose a threat to them as they carry the sand to and from the river. This may cause a serious threat to the school-going children. Who knows what might happen, and our children may someday meet with an accident. So, I request that this illegal smuggling be stopped right away,” alleged a local.
