Berhampur: CPI-M has launched a 19-day-long 'padayatra' in Ganjam district to press for demands, including introduction of Universal Public Distribution System (UPDS) providing at least 35 kg rice to every BPL and APL family per month at Rs 2 a kg.

The padyatra, started from Bhramarput village under Digapahandi block yesterday.

The Left Party is also demanding, among other things, increase of the minimum support price (MSP) of paddy from Rs 1250 per quintal to Rs 2000 per quintal.

After covering five blocks - Digapahandi, Sanakhemundi, Kukudakahndi, Chikiti and Rangeilunda traversing around 300-km, the yatra will end at Berhampur on January 24.

Party's Politburo member Sitaram Yechury is scheduled to attend a public meeting here on the same day, party sources said.
