Contractual sweepers of Rayagada Municipality continue cease-work stir

Rayagada: Contractual sweepers engaged by Rayagada Municipality continued their cease-work stir for the second day today. The workers are demanding wage hike, renewal of work-agreement and change in working hours.

According to sources, the cease-work stir has adversely affected cleaning and sanitation works across various wards of the town.

The sweepers have threatened to continue their agitation till their demands are not fulfilled.

“We were asked to sweep from 6 AM to 10 AM. There are a lot of people who open their shops, offices or jog at that time. We want a change in that,” Santosh, a contractual sweeper said.

On the other hand, Mangelal Jain, Executive Officer, Rayagada Municipality said “As the agreement is being renewed, we are evaluating if it can be extended further. For this we have called for a district-level meeting.”

“We will see whether the current agreement can be extended or a new tender has to be issued,” Jain added.
