Contractual nurses strike hits medical care

Bhubaneswar/Cuttack: Medical services in most of the government hospitals in the state including the three medical colleges and hospitals at Cuttack, Berhampur and Burla were badly hampered due to the one-day token strike called by the Contractual Nursing Staff Association to press several demands. Over 1,500 nurses went off on a day`s leave in support of the strike.

The demands of the association included abolition of appointment of contractual nurses and regularisation of services of the contractual nurses. The nurses had earlier staged dharna on December 19 and resorted to black-badge protests for two weeks from February 29 to March 13 to press their demands. Medical care in the SCB medical college and hospital in Cuttack, the largest government hospital in the state, too has been affected as over 421 contractual nurses joined the strike. However, the Emergency Officer of the SCB medical said that the authorities were prepared to meet any emergency situation.
