Bhubaneswar: Amid discontent over suggestions of the Supreme Court to abolish the heredity system of service by sevayats in the Puri Srimandir, senior BJP leader Bijoy Mohapatra Friday alleged that a conspiracy is being hatched against Puri Srimandir and the Jagannath culture.

Talking on the sidelines of the 'Rashtriya Mahadhivesan' of Govardhan Mutt in Puri yesterday, Mohapatra stated, "A conspiracy is being hatched against Jagannath culture.”

“How can a case come up in the Apex Court in such hurried manner, that too within a month?" he questioned.

Mohapatra's remarks came in response to media queries on the recent Supreme Court's suggestion on abolition of heredity system of service by sevayats in Puri Srimandir.

Although the hereditary service of the servitors is mentioned in section 15 of Shree Jagannath Temple Act, 1952, the Supreme Court has not been informed about it, Mohapatra said.

Odisha Law Minister Pratap Jena, who also attended the event, said that Supreme Court has only suggested while the amicus curiae appointed by the Apex court will shortly visit the State to review the matter.

"The Supreme Court has just given its opinion and final decision on the concerned matter is yet to be announced. Appropriate steps will be taken after discussing all aspects,' said Jena.
