Berhampur: Congress workers staged a demonstration at Chhatrapur town on Tuesday demanding declaration of Odisha`s Ganjam district as drought-hit. A large number of Congress workers joined the demonstration in front of the office of the Collector at the district headquarter town shouting slogans.

The party asked the government to take immediate steps to compensate the farmers in the rabi season and submitted a memorandum in support of their demands to the district collector.

Organised by the farmers` wing of the party, several leaders including Sanakhemundi MLA Ramesh Jena, farmer`s wing leader Brundaban Khateai, Alekh Choudhury and others participated in the demonstration. "Crop loss was reported in almost all 22 blocks in the district due to insufficient rainfall. The government should declare immediate package so that the farmers can be compensated for their loss in the rabi season," said Khatei. He also demanded total waiving of crop loan of farmers affected by the untimely rains last year.

Meanwhile the district administration has acknowledged the crop loss due to shortage of rainfall in the month of September and October.

Moisture stress condition was reported in 86,825 hectares in paddy crop out 2.23 lakh hectares covered in the kharif season.
