Bhubaneswar: For the Capital denizens, this weekend will be very hot and sultry. The maximum day temperature which has been hovering at around 37 degree Celsius, post Fani, will see rise from today. And by the weekend, the mercury will shoot up to touch 42 degree Celsius. And with humidity level reigning at around 70 per cent, the weekend for the Capital city would then impart a feeling of a hot oven.

The nagging fact for the city denizens is still around 30 per cent area of the Capital is yet to witness restoration of power supply. The State government is still non-committal on power supply restoration to the areas on any near future date. In the context, heat related ailments will witness an appreciable spike in coming days. The city civic body and health officials have to keep a close watch for the coming 6-8 days, feel Met observers.

However, here is a warning shot for the western, interior and northern Odisha. The entire parts in this region of the State will witness blistering heat wave in the upcoming week.

Districts like Bolangir, Bargarh and Sundergarh will see mercury burning red hot and sizzling at 48-49 degree Celsius on May 21-22. In weather parlance, temperature over 45 degree Celsius is termed as severe heat wave. It seems if weather model predictions prove true, then most parts in western Odisha will witness severe heat wave on May 21-22. And interior and northern Odisha will witness heat wave on the same dates.

However, when political heat will be at its peak, the maximum temperature on the counting day in these parts of Odisha will hover at around 40 -42 degree Celsius. Moreover, the weather models indicate some nip in the mercury level on counting day in Bhubaneswar also. The models reveal Capital city along with the entire coastal region will have a maximum day temperature of around 34 - 38 degree Celsius from counting day onwards. While cities like Berhampur, Kendrapara, Baleshwar will record maximum day temperature of around 34 -35 degree Celsius, the Capital city and Silver city will not record over 38-37 degree Celsius, respectively.

As per IMD data, many places in Odisha had recorded around 2-3 degree Celsius above the average normal maximum day temperature yesterday (May 13). The maximum day temperature for Bhubaneswar yesterday was around 37 degree Celsius, which is nearly one degree up over that of last year.

Similarly, the maximum day temperature in Bhubaneswar today is forecast at around 38-39 degree Celsius, but last year on this date the maximum temperature recorded was mere 33 degree Celsius. The above analysis shows the maximum day temperature in Capital city in 2019 during the second week of May has turned hotter.
