Coal dump mishap toll rises to 11
Bhubaneswar: The death toll in the coal overburden dump collapse at Basundhara colliery in Sundergarh district increased to 11 on Thursday with the recovery of one more body from the debris.
The victim has been identified as Surekha Naik, police said.
Meanwhile, the officials engaged in rescue operation at the site said they were yet to trace two persons who were feared to have been trapped inside the unsettled heap. Sniffer dogs have also been pressed into service to help the rescue team, they added.
“We are using hydro-excavation machines to shift the debris from the site to other nearby places,” said a member of the rescue team.
The incident took place on Saturday when some people from nearby villages were collecting residual coal left the discarded stack of Mahanadi Coalfield Ltd (MCL) at Kulda opencast mine in Basundhara-Garjanbahal area. Some of them were near the giant heap when a portion of it suddenly caved in.
On Sunday, nine deaths were reported even as about two teams of Odisha Distaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and seven platoons of police were deployed to carry out the rescue operation.
