The Health Department of the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) conducted a major raid on hotels and food outlets along Medical Road in the Mangalabag area on Wednesday, seizing large quantities of stale, adulterated and expired food items. During the drive, the health team sealed a hotel after finding serious hygiene violations.
Officials said a significant amount of stale food was confiscated during the inspection. The raid was part of a wider enforcement drive covering hotels, cake shops, medicine stores and other food vending units operating in the busy Medical Road zone, which caters to patients and attendants visiting nearby hospitals.
Some shop owners expressed anger over the action. One vendor said, “If my food is rotten, they should test it in a laboratory and show me the report. If it is proven, I will accept the punishment. I have four to five staff working here. What about their livelihood?” Another shop owner claimed, “We are operating inside the vending zone, yet officials poured bleach on our food. I have suffered a loss of nearly Rs 10,000.”

Defending the operation, a CMC health officer said the outlets were selling food in highly unhygienic conditions, even to outstation visitors at low prices. “Three shops have been sealed. One was selling yesterday’s meat. Those involved have also been arrested,” the officer added.
Further inspections are likely to continue in the area.
