Paralakhemundi: Chief Minister Naveen Pattanaik today launched the much hyped cycle for girl students programme  at a glittering ceremony at the Gajapati stadium here. Girl students of class ten have been included in the programme. The government had announced the programme on January 4 to. The programme aims at encouraging girls to learn and become literate.

Addressing the people on the occasion, chief minister said that the programme would benefit especially the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe girl students in tribal dominated districts. Bi-cycles would be provided for the students in government as well as government aided schools. Naveen said that over one lakh girl students will be covered under the programme. Cycles would be distributed among 12, 000 boys too, he added.

The chief minister announced that scheduled caste and scheduled tribe students from class one to class eight would be provided school uniforms which would cost the exchequer about 70 crore. Naveen said that the government would provide a bank cheque of Rs 2600 to each girl student to purchase instead of supplying the cycles directly.
