A case of alleged corporal punishment has come to light from Simanbadi locality in Odisha’s Kandhamal district, where a Class III student was beaten by a teacher for failing to bring his mathematics notebook to school, sources said on Tuesday.

According to sources, the teacher allegedly assaulted the child with a bamboo stick, leaving him physically injured and mentally traumatised. The young student suffered serious injuries to his back and hands and is currently unwell and fearful following the incident.
After returning home from the private English medium school in pain, the child narrated the ordeal to his father. Alarmed by his son’s condition, the child’s father immediately took him to a nearby health facility for treatment. The child is now recuperating at home.
The incident has caused deep concern among parents, especially as the area is officially considered a corporal-punishment-free zone. Despite the seriousness of the allegations, no response has yet been received from the school authorities regarding the incident.
The case has once again raised questions about student safety, discipline practices in private schools, and enforcement of child protection norms in educational institutions.
“The child has injury marks on the left arm, right arm, and the back of his body,” Abinash Mallick, doctor treating the Class III student, said to OTV when contacted.
