Chilika bird census conducted

Berhampur: The annual bird census in Chilika lake was conducted today with around 80 experts engaged in direct count in the vast water body in Odisha.

Although the census was completed, it would take time to estimate the number of birds and the species that visited the lake this winter, Divisional Forest Officer, Chilika Wildlife Division B P Acharya said. Last winter, 8,04,452 birds of 169 species took shelter in the lake, he said.

Ornithologists of the Bombay Natural History Society, National Board of Wildlife, College of Veterinary Science and several wildlife activists took part in the bird counting in the 1100-sq km lake.
