A child marriage attempt was thwarted in the capital city on Wednesday after members of Ruchika Social Welfare Organisation conducted a surprise raid based on credible information.
The incident took place at the Khandual Temple near Sarakantara village, under the jurisdiction of Khandagiri Police Station in Bhubaneswar, where elaborate preparations were underway for the marriage of a 16-year-old girl, a clear violation of child protection laws.
According to sources, a wedding tent had already been erected, and arrangements for the feast were in progress. The minor was allegedly being married off to a youth from the Nayagarh region. However, before the ceremony could take place, the intervention of the organisation halted the illegal event.

The situation took a dramatic turn as the girl’s family members reportedly whisked her away to an undisclosed location, raising further concern about her safety and the family’s intentions. When authorities reached the spot, both the minor girl and the intended groom were missing.
Police have launched a search operation across multiple locations to trace both individuals. Meanwhile, several family members have been detained for questioning. Interrogation is currently underway to determine who orchestrated the marriage and who assisted in hiding the girl.
Officials emphasised that strict action will be taken against those involved in the attempted child marriage. The incident once again highlights the ongoing challenge of eliminating underage marriages, despite repeated awareness campaigns and strong legal provisions in the state.
