Puri: The century’s first ‘Nagarjuna Vesha’ (when the deities are dressed like warriors) of Lord Jagannath will be held on November 27, 2020 in Puri Srimandir.

As the event is rare, it assumes importance among devotees and a large turnout is expected, for the event  will be held after a gap of 25 years.

As per astrologer of Samanta Chandrasekhar almanac, Baikunthanath Nayak "The Nagarjuna Vesha will fall on Kartik Dwadasa Friday, November 27, 2020. This Vesha is occasionally done in the month of Kartika when there are six days of "Panchuka."

Keeping in view the large turnout of devotees, the servitors have demanded adequate arrangements by the administration.

“Certainly there will be a huge rush of devotees during the Nagarjuna Vesha. The administration should focus on several aspects including how the darshan by devotees could be streamlined inside the temple,” Binayak Dasmohapatra, senior Daitapati servitor said.

As per mythology, the Nagarjuna Vesha is celebrated to commemorate the killing of Sahashrarjuna by Lord Parsuram.

The Nagarjuna Vesha was last held in 1994 and prior to that in 1993, 1983 and 1966.

However, six devotees had died following a stampede during the Nagarjuna Vesha on November 26, 1993.

Though the temple administration is yet to make an official announcement for the 2020 Nagarjuna Vesha, the matter of streamlining things so that devotees can have a smooth darshan during the ritual will be given due importance, said Puri King Gajapati Maharaj Dibyasingha Deb.

"With Lord’s blessing everything will be conducted smoothly. The administration will definitely bring up the matter for discussion during the Srimandir management committee meeting,” the Puri King said.
