Central Zoo Authority questions legality of transfer of tigress Sundari to Nandankanan
Bhubaneswar: Tigress Sundari seems to be piling up problems for the Odisha government as the Central Zoo Authority has now questioned the legality of the transfer of the big cat from Satkosia Tiger Reserve to Nandankanan Zoological Park.
Citing the National Zoo Policy, 1998, the authority sent a letter to the PCCF today to reconsider its decision of shifting the tigress to Nandankanan zoo.
“Except for obtaining founder animals for approved breeding programme and infusion of new blood into inbred groups, no zoo can collect animals from the wild,” the letter from the authority highlighted.
The authority requested the Odisha PCCF to consider all pros and cons and take decision in accordance with the National Zoo Policy.
The letter was in response to a complaint filed by one wildlife activist, Ajay Dubey, who termed the decision of the Odisha government to transfer tigress Sundari to Nandankanan as unlawful.
