CARE Hospitals in Bhubaneswar saved a young life through rare emergency heart surgery

Bhubaneswar: In a remarkable medical achievement, doctors at CARE Hospitals, Bhubaneswar successfully saved the life of a 25-year-old patient diagnosed with a rare and life-threatening heart condition known as Acute Aortic Dissection.

The patient was admitted to the emergency department with sudden and severe chest pain. Recognizing the seriousness of the condition, the emergency medical team acted swiftly and initiated advanced diagnostic tests. Investigations confirmed Acute Aortic Dissection, a critical condition involving a tear in the aorta—the main blood vessel that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. The condition is considered a medical emergency and requires immediate surgical intervention.

The patient was taken up for emergency open-heart surgery, which was successfully performed by a highly skilled Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery (CTVS) team led by Dr Suvakanta Biswal, Senior Consultant – CTVS, with support from Dr Somen, Consultant – CTVS, and a dedicated team of CTVS nursing staff.
The surgery was efficiently managed by the Cardiac Anaesthesia team led by Dr Manoranjan Padhi and Dr Dharmajeevan, ensuring a smooth and safe procedure.

Speaking about the case, Dr Suvakanta Biswal said,

“Acute aortic dissection is a highly dangerous condition where every minute counts. Early recognition of symptoms and immediate surgical intervention are critical to saving the patient’s life. This successful outcome was possible due to timely diagnosis, quick coordination, and the collective efforts of our multidisciplinary team.”

Following the surgery, the patient showed steady recovery and was discharged in stable condition on the 6th post-operative day.
