Puri: The carcass of an Irrawaddy dolphin was found floating in Chilika lake near Mahisa village of the district on Monday. The matter came into light after some locals spotted it and later informed the forest department.

On being informed Satpada forest department team rushed into the spot and recovered the carcass.

Satpada Ranger informed that the exact reason behind the death of the dolphin can be ascertained only after the post-mortem is done.

Meanwhile, there has been a sharp decline in the dolphin population in Chilika, the largest brackish water lake in Asia. Official sources said the number of dolphins has dropped to 156 from 180 which has now emerged as a major concern.
