A tragic incident unfolded in Mohana, Gajapati district, as a car that went missing in the river on September 2 was recovered today with a deceased person inside. Authorities have identified the victim as Pratap Panda, a resident of the R. Udayagiri area.
According to reports, Pratap was returning from his shop at Tarabhar on the 2nd of this month when his car reportedly slipped into the river near the Ghodakon Bridge. Strong river currents carried the vehicle downstream, leaving locals and family members in distress as search operations began immediately.
Today, following reports from residents about the floating vehicle, a combined team of the Odisha Police and the Fire Services conducted a rescue and recovery operation at the Kaliatota River.
The car was found badly damaged and crushed, with Pratap Panda’s body inside. Authorities confirmed that the victim succumbed to drowning.

The recovery operation involved careful maneuvering in the swift river currents. Officials have said that further investigation is underway to understand the circumstances that led to the car slipping into the river. Local authorities have also urged residents to remain cautious near riverbanks, especially during periods of high water levels.
This tragic incident has raised concerns about road and bridge safety in the region, as well as the risks posed by fast-flowing rivers during the monsoon season. District authorities are expected to review safety measures near Ghodakon Bridge and other vulnerable areas to prevent such incidents in the future.
