Bus Terminal Relocation Row: Commuters suffer as buses stay off roads in Berhampur

Berhampur: Hundreds of commuters were stranded as busses stopped plying from Berhampur to Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Chhatrapur and Aska and other parts as part of the protest by the Ganjam district private bus owners’ association against the relocation of bus terminal to Haldiapadar.

The association on Sunday observed a strike protesting relocation of the city bus stand to modern bus terminal at Haldiapadar.

It alleged that the administration had earlier discussed about the shifting of bus terminal from Berhampur to Haldiapadar but no decision was take on problems related to bus route and tax permit issue.

The private bus owners’ association also alleged that the administration is in a hurry to start the operation without making proper security arrangements at the new bus terminal.

Meanwhile, the association has reportedly threatened to continue the strike till the district administration resolves such issues.

Earlier on Saturday, members of small traders’ association gheraoed residence of MLA Ramesh Chandra Chyau Patnaik in Berhampur protesting the city bus terminal’s relocation.

They demanded the administration to make arrangements for rehabilitation of 200 traders while shifting the bus terminal and wrote to the MLA and BDA (Berhampur Development Authority) Chairman. Later, the situation was brought to control after Patnaik assured the agitators to look into their demands.
