Balasore: In a major crackdown on drugs trading, Excise sleuths seized 1 kg brown sugar worth Rs 1 crore from Mill Badi area of Station Bazaar area under Jaleswar police limits in Balasore district and arrested one person in the early hours of Wednesday.

The contraband was seized in a joint raid carried out by sleuths of Central Excise intelligence wing of Cuttack and Jaleswar Excise department. The arrested accused has been identified as Sapan Kumar Pradhan. A gun was seized from his house.

According to the excise officials, Pradhan had been running drug trade in Mill Badi area for a long time. Acting on a tip-off, the excise sleuths had conducted the raid.

It is pertinent to mention here that brown sugar trade is on the rise in Balasore. On October 7, police had arrested two drug peddlers and seized 38.64 gm brown sugar from Markona area under Simulia Police limits in Balasore district.

In another incident, Airport Police seized 52.23 grams of brown sugar and arrested three drug peddlers in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday.
