Angul/Rayagada: The owner and a worker of a brick kiln were electrocuted to death after coming in contact with an underground electricity wire at Haripur village under Talcher Police limits of Angul district today.

According to sources, the owner of the brick kiln Ananta Charan Sahu was digging up the earth when his crowbar came in contact with an underground electricity cable and electrocuted him to death.

In a bid to rescue Sahu, a worker of the brick kiln Manjiri Munda rushed near Sahu and was also electrocuted in the process, added sources. Meanwhile, police have registered a case of accidental death and sent the bodies for post-mortem.

In another instance in Rayagada district, tension prevailed in Chandrapur village after locals staged protest today demanding compensation for kin of a person who was electrocuted to death in the district on Sunday.

According to sources, one person was killed and five others sustained critical injuries after coming in contact with a live electricity wire at Gerengaguda village in the district yesterday. However, the locals have alleged that the mishap occurred due to the negligence of the electricity department.

Demanding compensation for the kin of the deceased, the locals staged protest by burning tyres on the road. Shops, markets also remained closed due to the protest in the area.
