Kalahandi: Panic gripped local residents of Pandi village in the district after water from Indravati South main canal entered the village following a breach in the canal today. According to sources, a 20 feet breach developed in the main canal on Wednesday night.

On getting information, a team of engineers from Indravati Water Department rushed into the spot to take stock of the situation.

Indravati South canal spreads over 84 kms and the embankment of the canal has become weak. Though tenders to carry out repair works at an estimated cost of Rs 330 crore was floated four times in the past, the work is yet to begin, informed sources.

The locals of the area alleged that similar breach had occurred several times in part but no concrete steps were taken to resolve such issues. Till last reports, efforts have begun to plug the breach.
