Kendrapara: Alleging that they have not got their quota of rice at Rs 2-a-kg for last one year, about 62 families in Karanj panchayat under Mahakalapada block, who come under below the poverty line (BPL) category, have launched a fast-onto-death agitation.

These families, it is learnt, were included in the BPL list in 1997, and have been availing the facilities under different schemes since then. However, it is alleged that they are deprived of the subsidized rice for about one year. Drawing the attention of senior officials did not reportedly yield prompting the beneficiaries to resort to stir.

“We had brought the matter to the notice of senior officers including the collector, the civil supply officer and the block development officer. But, no initiative was taken to give us the quota of rice.

Helpless, we launched the agitation to highlight our plight,” said one of the beneficiaries.

In the meantime, the BDO said that he has already intimated the civil supply officer (CSO) about the matter.

“Following their (the beneficiaries’) complaints, I had asked the supply inspector to inquire into the mater. After getting his report, I have brought the matter to the notice of the CSO seeking action at his end,” said BDO, Mahakalapada Subas Chandra Das
