Tribal girl thrashed, paraded on street in Balangir district
Balangir: As the world is celebrating International Women’s Day, a tribal girl lodged complaint of being thrashed and her hair cut off over alleged mobile theft at Paradhiapali village under Sadar Block of Balangir district.
The girl reported that, on March 6, she had gone for a tailoring class at a neighbour’s house in her village. But she was accused of stealing a mobile and was severely beaten up. The neighbour’s family even cut off her hair and paraded her in the village with a garland of slippers on her neck.
As the parents of the girl were not present in the house on the fateful day, she arrived at the police station today, after return of her parents, with the cut off hair in hands and lodged her complaint.
Talking to media persons Balangir SDPO Saroj Kumar Mohapatra said, “The girl has alleged that she had gone to house of a zamindar in her village who allegedly cut off her hair, suspecting her of stealing their mobile. We have started investigation on the matter. It is surely an unfortunate incident.”
The incident has invited acute criticism in the district. Zilla Adivasi Sangh has threatened to start an agitation if action against the accused is not taken within six hours.
In yet another shameful incident against a widow, identified as Kamakala Gouda of Sanaborisingh village under Gangapur police station in Ganjam district, was a victim of the wrath of the Inspector-In-Charge of Gangapur police station.
Son of Kamakala alleged that the IIC, who had visited the village to resolve a property dispute between Kamakala’s family and another family of the village, severely thrashed his mother breaking her hand.
Talking to media persons, son of Kamakala, Rajendra Gouda said, “When I had gone for a bath, at around 11.30 am, I got a call from my house that police is torturing my family members. I came to know of the incident after returning home, the IIC has himself beaten my mother.”
