Similpal Tiger Reserve to remain off limits from June 16

Baripada: The Similipal Tiger Reserve will remain closed for tourists from June 16 in view of the rainy season, official sources said on Thursday.

According to Field Director M Mohan, the reserve along with the national park and the adjoining wildlife sanctuary are usually closed by mid-June as the internal roads and other communication channels are washed away during the rainy season and commuting becomes extremely difficult.

Hence, the entry of tourists is prohibited till the end of monsoon. The date of reopening will be notified after the monsoon is over, Mohan said.

Located in northern Odisha, Similipal, famous for its pristine beauty coupled with its varied flora and fauna including the characteristic black Melanistic Royal Bengal Tiger and breathtaking waterfalls attracts tourists from the country and abroad every year.

Spread over 2750 sq km, Similpal Tiger Reserve is a part of Similipal-Kuldiha-Hadgarh Elephant Reserve and is considered to be the largest tiger reserve of the country.
