Sadhu Meher, Dr Minz, singer Harpal among Padma awardees
Bhubaneswar/New Delhi: Noted cine personality Sadhu Meher, eminent doctor Dr Mukut Minz, renowned Sambalpuri folk singer Jitendra Haripal and famous Odissi dancer Aruna Mohanty are featured in the list of Padma awardees, which was announced today by the Government of India on the eve of Republic Day.
Sadhu Meher is well known for his remarkable contribution towards the movie industry including the Hindi cinema world with outstanding work in Bhuvan Shome, Ankur and Mrigaya. He is one of the founders of Indian parallel cinema in mid 1980s.
Commenting on the announcement, Meher said, “There are no boundaries to my happiness. I thank the Government of India for choosing me to bestow the award. I will dedicate the award to all artists of Odisha with a wish for growth of them in their fields in coming days.”
Asked about to whom he will give the credit for the Padma Shri award, Meher replied, “I will keep my commitment and efforts responsible for the award.”
Dr Mukut Minz, who is working as the HOD of Renal Transplant Surgery at Mohali-based Fortis Hospital, has been serving people for more than 30 years after passing out the MBBS degree from Burla medical college in 1976. Dr Minz got a wide media coverage recently when he successfully undertook a kidney transplant surgery on External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj.

Dr Minz commented, “I was expecting to receive such prestigious award as throughout the life I have been working with diligence and honesty for more than 30 years. I thank the Government of India as well as the Odisha government for choosing me to get the award.”
He added, “Undoubtedly it is a big encouragement for me.”
The Government of India also named Jitendra Haripal to receive the Padma Shri award. Harpal is the singer of Rangabati song which has been one of the popular songs in the country till date.
The Padma awards are conferred in recognition of exceptional non-military achievements in different fields including arts, sports, education, medicine, social work and industry.
