Rush in market, fruits dearer ahead of Sabitri Amabasya
Bhubaneswar: Markets across the state are witnessing rush for sarees and accessories of women while fruit prices have sky rocketed ahead of Sabitri Amabasya on Thursday.
While mangoes were available for Rs 30 to 40-a-kg a week ago, the price has gone up to Rs 60 to 80. Similarly, price of apples has increased up to Rs 200 from around Rs 150 a week ago. Price of litchi, which is available in the state only during the festivals of Savitri and Rajo, has shot up to Rs 150 a kg. Besides the prices of jackfruit, pineapple, litchi, orange and grape have also gone up drastically.
The capital city does a fruit business of Rs 40 lakh on daily basis, but the business goes up by 20 percent during Savitri festival. More than 150 fruit vendors run their business in the city.
Saree and beauty accessory stores are also attracting women who observe the occasion with heavy discounts and offers.
Married women fast for their husbands during the festival as per the mythological legend of Savitri. With her wit and presence of mind, Savitri could manage to get her dead husband Satyavan back to life from the hands of the god of death Yama.
