Police, Maoists exchange fire in Odisha forest

Sundergarh: An exchange of fire took place between security forces and Maoists inside Lunga forest under Mahulapada police limits in Sundergarh district here on Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of state police officials and special operations group (SOG) jawans led by Rourkela Superintendant of Police Anirudh Singh conducted raids inside the forest area to trace the Maoist hideout.

Police recovered a huge cache of arms and ammunition from the camp.

Briefing about the anti-naxal operations, Western Range IG Radha Kishan Sharma said, “We have destroyed a Maoist camp after an exchange of fire that lasted for nearly half an hour. Around 455 rounds were fired by the forces.”

“After the search operations, 4 LMG magazines, 200 LMG rounds of live bullets and other items including naxal magazines, posters, medicines and dresses were recovered,” Sharma added.
