Over 100 detained ahead of farmers’ summit

Bhubaneswar: The police on Tuesday detained over a hundred farmers in a couple of places in the State who were on their way to attend a convention of Navnirman Krushak Sangathan, a farmers association, here on Wednesday.

Reports reaching here said, while as many as 30 farmers were detained by police in Keonjhar, the Jajpur police have taken 20 farmers into custody.

The reports further stated, the peasants who were travelling in Barbil-Puri Express to attend the convention in Bhubaneswar, were detained in Cuttack railway station. Protesting move of the police, the agitated farmers have resorted to rail roko in the millennium city. Above 40 farmers have also been kept in preventive custody in Bhubaneswar railway station.

Meanwhile, as a precautionary move, two top leaders of the farmers’ body- Akshay Kumar and Seshadev Nanda were arrested by the Commissionerate Police on Monday. Sources said, in protest of their arrest, Kumar and Nanda who have been lodged in Jharpada jail have denied food.

Police said, heavy forces will be deployed to keep any untoward incident at bay.

“In view of the mega event of the farmers, we have deployed 50 platoons of forces in the capital city. People in groups will not be allowed to enter the city”, police commissioner YB Khurania said.
