Odisha orders 48-hour internet ban in Kendrapara

Kendrapara: Once bitten twice shy, Odisha government after the Bhadrak unrest, today promptly clamped down internet services in Kendrapara after tension surfaced over an objectionable post on social media purportedly targeted towards a particular community.

The office of the Chief Minister informed about the restraining orders on use of internet which came into effect from 3 PM today for 48 hours.

According to sources, the Kendrapara collector had written to the Home department in this regard.

Besides, Police forces have been deployed in Kendrapara to prevent any untoward incidents. Sources said 15 platoons of police force were deployed in the area.

“We just have one demand that the person who shared such comments should be arrested and charges similar to those leveled on the accused behind the Bhadrak incident should be framed,” said Kendrapara resident Syed Tunna.

“We received an allegation that a video went viral in Facebook after which we are probing the matter though the situation is tense, it is under control,” said Kendrapara SP, Dayanidhi Gochhayat.

“Yesterday a person uploaded an objectionable document on facebook which hurt the sentiments of a particular community. We are keeping a close eye on the situation. Sufficient police force has been deployed and now law and order situation will be allowed to happen,” said Kendrapara Collector, Muralidhar Mallick.
