Odisha negotiating with Centre to grant iron ore lease to Posco

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is negotiating with the Centre about granting an iron ore lease to Posco, after amendments to the Mines Minerals Development and Regulation (MMDR) Bill were ratified by Parliament.

This was informed by Steel and Mines minister Prafulla Kumar Mallick in the State Legislative Assembly yesterday. Mallick stated that the Korean steel major will have to take part in the auction process as per the new law. But, since the State government had committed to the company that it will provide an iron ore lease to set up its steel plant, it is currently negotiating with the Union government to resolve the issue without violating any law.

Meanwhile, senior lawyer Manas Mohapatra has opined that legally Centre can grant mine to Posco.
