Rayagada: Maoists ran riot at a construction camp near Lakris under Kashipur block in Rayagada district torching as many as nine vehicles late yesterday night.

According to sources, two tippers, one earth-moving JCB vehicles and four tractors were among the vehicles set afire by the Red rebels.

Around 80-100 Maoists are said to have arrived at the spot and torched the vehicles. Some Maoist posters have been seized from the spot, informed sources.

However, rejecting media reports about the number of Red rebels present on the spot, DGP KB Singh said, “No the figure is not correct. About 30-40 Maoists had attacked the contractors. Also they sat afire one JCB, 3/4 tractors and two tippers. Simply they were trying to divert our attention from some other places.”

“Our operation is going on very well in that area and its details I can’t disclose,” Singh maintained.
