Major fire averted near petrol depot in Cuttack

Cuttack: The Millennium city on Friday averted a major disaster when fire personnel managed to prevent a fire that broke out in a bush close to the Sikharpur petrol depot from spreading.

According to sources, the incident took place around noon today. A fire broke out in the bush close to the depot and started spreading, the sources added.

On being informed about the incident, fire personnel rushed the spot and restricted the fire from engulfing, the petrol depot.

Pradip Kumar Das, manager of the depot said, “At around 11 am we saw smoke billowing out of the forest and we immediately called fire officials. But they arrived after 45 minutes.”

“By that time, we had fired water hydrant to control the fire. Later, the fire officials doused the flame,” Das added.

Rabindra Ketan Sahoo, chief fire officer of Cuttack said, “At first, fire tenders from Chauliaganj fire station rushed to the spot and tried to douse the flame. But the intensity of the fire was so high that, the manager of the depot called us.”

“After getting the information, we came here with more fire tenders and doused the flame. Now the situation is under control,” Sahoo added.

Till the last report came in, the reason behind the outbreak of fire is yet to be known.
