Lady ASI among four cops attacked by villagers

Umerkote: A lady Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) and three Odisha Armed Police Force (OAPF) personnel were injured after they were attacked a group of people in Kalarasahi village of Jamarunda block under Umerkote police station in Nabarangpur district on Wednesday night.

According to reports, a team of Umerkote police, led by the lady ASI Jyoshnarani Behera, and comprising OAPF ASI Hari Majhi and four OAPF constables had gone to Kalarasahi village on Wednesday night for an excise raid.

On reaching the village, the team found a liquor trader selling liquor to some villagers. As the police tried to restrain the villagers, they attacked the cops with sticks, bricks and boulders.

While the ASI sustained bleeding injuries on her head, the villagers severely thrashed three OAPF personnel and damaged the police jeep.

Following information, additional police force rushed to the village and rescued the police team and admitted them to the hospital.

“We have registered a case under section 147, 149, 341, 342, 294, 307, 354, 379 and 34 of the IPC, section 7 of Criminal Law Amendment Act and section 3 of Prevention of Damage to Public Property (PDPP) Act. Police will take stern action and arrest those involved in the incident. Besides, action will also be taken against those who have stage-managed the incident,” Birendra Kumar Senapati, IIC of Umerkote Police Station told media persons here.
