Journalists’ bodies condemn attack on OTV scribe

Cuttack/Bhubaneswar: Several working journalists and media organizations across the State condemned the brutal attack on OTV reporter Pravat Bisoyi and cameraman Smruti Ranjan Samant yesterday in Cuttack district where they were covering a child marriage and demanded adequate security for the people working for the fourth pillar of democracy.

Members of several journalists’ organisations, including Odisha Union of Working Journalists (OUWJ), Association of Young Journalists and Cuttack Press Club, met Cuttack DCP and pressed their demand through a letter.

Similarly, members of Berhampur working journalist association in Ganjam district today took out a huge rally to the office of Inspector General of Police (IGP), Southern Range at Berhampur and demanded security for journalists.

The attack was also criticized by several other senior journalists saying the people who are stopping reporters from doing their job should be punished by law.

Meanwhile, sources in the SCB Medical College and Hospital said though the condition of the brave journalist has improved, he will be under observation for the next 72 hours.

The Commissionerate Police has forwarded the nine accused, including the groom’s father and some others from the bride’s side, to the court.
