IT dept hints at seizure of BJD account

Bhubaneswar: Even as the Odisha Assembly witnessed uproarious scenes on Wednesday with the Opposition BJP and Congress demanding a reply from chief minister Naveen Patnaik on transactions in BJD’s bank account, the Income Tax department has hinted that it could seize the account if needed.

Top authorities of the department, on condition of anonymity, said steps will be taken to seize the regional party’s bank account with the SBI main branch here, if suspicious transactions are found.

Meanwhile, the bank authorities said that they have received a letter from the Income Tax department seeking transaction details of the account since its beginning. “We will fully cooperate with the IT officials in this regard,” said a bank official.

Earlier in the day, the House was adjourned till 3 pm after Opposition members created a ruckus while Law minister Arun Sahu was giving a statement on funds credited into the bank account belonging to BJD, as alleged by Leader of Opposition Narasingha Mishra.

Dissatisfied with the statement of Sahu, members of BJP and Congress shouted slogans and moved to the well of the House. Congress chief whip Tara Prasad Bahinipati stood over the reporters’ table and broke the Speaker’s mike.

On Tuesday, Mishra had asked the chief minister to clarify whether the bank account number 10091755246 in SBI’s main branch in Bhubaneswar belongs to the Biju Janata Dal and what kind of involvement he has with this account. He had alleged a hefty amount of Rs 8 crore was found to have been deposited in this account on a single day.
