Fresh tremors strike parts of Odisha

Bhubaneswar: Tremors of a fresh earthquake, measuring 7.3 magnitude on Richter scale with its epicentre in Nepal, jolted northern and eastern parts of India, including Odisha, around 12.45 pm today.

The vibrations were felt at many places in the State like Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Ganjam, Jagatsinghpur, Rourkela and Kendrapara, triggering panic among the people there. However, there was no immediate report of loss of life or damage to property, sources said.

With memories fresh from the last month’s massive and devastating quake in the neighbouring country, people were today seen frantically calling up their relatives and friends to enquire about their safety.

People working in multi-storied buildings were found running helter-skelter. “We came out of the room when it started shaking all around. Within a few seconds, all of my colleagues ran out of the office building and gathered outside,” a citizen said.

According to a Met official, the earthquake struck at 12.35 pm with its epicentre about 815 km North of Bhubaneswar located at latitude 27.60 degree North and longitude 86.00 degree East. Six seismic waves were felt within a span of 45 minutes in Nepal, he added.
