Fake notes seized in Baripada, Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar: In separate incidents, Odisha police arrested two persons for allegedly trying to circulate fake currency notes with a face value of nearly Rs 30,000 in Mayurbhanj and Bhubaneswar respectively.
Sources said, a major fake currency racket has been busted with seizure of Rs 16,000 fake notes from one Sagen Tudu (21) by Baripada police yesterday. The notes were of the denomination of the Rs 500.
Police said, Tudu was arrested while he was trying to use circulate the fake notes by exchanging them in Sungodia area. A group of people had earlier reported the matter to the police after they suspected the genuineness of such notes.
“Acting on a tip-off that the person was moving in the area with fake notes, we intercepted him and on search, 32 number of fake Rs 500 notes were seized from his possession, “said Baripada SDPO Abhimanyu Nayak.
Nayak informed that all the fake notes had the same serial number while it is suspected that the accused had made coloured photo-copies of a single original note. The accused had printed the fakes note with a purpose for cheating people.
In another incident, a Jharkhand youth has also been nabbed while trying to use a fake Rs 2,000 note at a shop at Bhubaneswar. The accused has been identified as Shamim Akhtar.
According to police, seven fake 2,000 notes with a face value of Rs 14,000 have been seized from Shamim while further investigation in connection with the incident is on.
