Din continues in Odisha Assembly over farmer suicides
Bhubaneswar: Opposition members continued to disrupt proceedings of Odisha Assembly for the fifth consecutive day on Monday demanding the formation of House Committee to investigate the farmer suicides in several parts of the State.
As the House assembled, MLAs of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) stood up and started shouting against the Naveen Patnaik government. They too stormed into the well and alleged that the government was not paying any attention to their demands that a House Committee should be formed to know that exact reason behind the farmer suicide cases.
Today, the Congress legislators too joined hands with the BJP lawmakers and demanded the Speaker to initiate for the formation of a House Committee for the same.
“We can’t understand why the government is considering our suggestion for a House Committee which can bring the exact reason behind the loss of valuable lives. Once the report is tabled, everything will be clear on the deaths,” said BJP’s Pradeep Purohit.
On the other hand, the ruling party said it is the prerogative of the Speaker to take a decision in the matter.
“We are ready for anything. But the Speaker will decide whether a House Committee on this matter should be formed or not. We are ready for the all party meet also,” stated BJD spokesperson Sashi Bhusan Behera.
While the Congress members sought a debate on farmers’ suicide, the BJP MLAs reiterated their demand for government response to rising incidents of peasants taking the extreme step. Unofficial reports said total five farmers ended life in past around a fortnight after the Bargarh incident.
